I was commissioned by the gallery Stair Sainty of Dover Street in London to produce this catalogue recording an exhibition of the works of the Cuban/Spanish artist Federico Beltrán-Masses. The London exhibition in 2012 recreated another in 1929. The artist rose to prominence in the early 1900’s, achieving great success on both sides of the Atlantic. He painted many great Hollywood stars and even King George VI.
The cover is a reproduction of a Beltrán-Masses catalogue from the 1920’s. It was screen printed on a quality off-white material to achieve the soft feel of the original block print.
A key aspect of the catalogue was faithful and accurate reproduction of the images. We spent hours poring over proofs and tweaking colour on press prompting Guy Stair-Sainty, the gallery owner, to comment that the result ‘far exceeded expectations’.
A shot of the distinctive ‘Beltrán blue’, for which the artist is well known, adorns the inside cover.
